FREEMAN WALKER
7:30pm, Thursday, February 18,
Selover Room,
Student Union,
Rocky Mountain College
In celebration of Black History Month, the YMCA Writer’s Voice is pleased to present a reading by David Cates, author of Freeman Walker. While Cates is in Billings, he will visit several classes at Rocky Mountain College and MSU-Billings.
The reading is free to the public.
Freeman Walker, a 2008 Montana Book Award Honor Book, is the story of a freed slave boy whose journey takes him to England, back to America during the Civil War, then to the gold camps of the American West, where he forges an alliance with a quixotic territorial governor modeled on Montana's Thomas Frances Meagher. Freeman Walker is about one man’s search for truth and moral freedom. Cates's distinctive voice and observations about American culture are both poignant and timely, and this story, in the end, rises above the ordinary to become a new creation myth for America.
David Allan Cates’ previous novel X out of Wonderland was a Montana Book Award Honor Book, and Hunger in America was a New York Times Notable Book. David has also published numerous short stories and travel writing pieces for the New York Times Sophisticated Traveler and Outside Magazine. He is the executive director of Missoula Medical Aid and leads groups of medical professionals on trips to Honduras, where he works in rural communities and hospitals as an interpreter. In Missoula, he works with the Writing Collaborative, teaching classes on the short story in high schools.
YMCA Writer Voice events are supported in part with grants from
the National Endowment for the Arts and the Montana Cultural Trust.
