YMCA Writer’s Voice present a Directors Forum

Lobby of the Alberta Bair Theater
We’re bringing together three of Montana’s most well known creative directors: Greg Johnson, Montana Repertory Theater; Victoria Coffman, MSU-Billings and Eric Hendricks, Billings Studio Theatre; for a lively panel discussion on the process of directing a theatrical production. YMCA Writer’s Voice director Corby Skinner will pose a series of questions for each of the three directors followed by an opportunity to respond and comment to their colleagues. Following the discussion, the floor will be opened to questions from the audience.
The program is supported by a grant to the YMCA Writer’s Voice from the National Endowment for the Arts to foster lively dialogue between artists and audiences. The event is free and open to the public.
NOTE: The Montana Rep production of Ken Ludwig’s comedy Leading Ladies will be presented at 7:30pm, Saturday, February 13 at the Alberta Bair Theater. For tickets call 256-6052. Billings Studio Theatre’s production of George Feydeau’s farce Hotel Paradiso is on stage from February 5th to the 21st, for tickets call 248-1141.
Questions for the directors:
1) What is the process for selecting a play for production? What do you look for in selecting work to produce?
2) Do you keep in mind your pool of actors before selecting a play? How is your audition process handled?
3) What has been your most challenging production, and why?
4) One of the biggest challenges in directing a play must be getting through it without any kind of negative emotional outbursts or hurt feelings. As a director, how do you keep lines of communication open and still get the most out of your cast and crew?
5) What work are you the most proud of?
6) What has been your most difficult situation? How was it resolved?
7) Are there plays you’d like to direct? Any theatrical or film actors you’d most like to work with?
