The Making of a Good Woman: Montana and the National Florenc | The Florence Crittenton Night Mission, founded in 1883 to offer sanctuary to "fallen women and wayward girls,” came to Montana in the late 1890s as Crittenton Home Circles. It was formed across the state to refer girls to the home established in Helena. The matron’s daybook from 1900 to 1915 and photographs of some of the anonymous women and girls who passed through the home—their backs to the camera—provide a backdrop for this unusual program presented by the Montana Historical Society’s Ellen Baumler. She explores uncharted territory in women’s history in Montana, tracing the national and local evolution of an organization that is as vital today as it was a century ago. Interpretive historian Ellen Baumler earned her doctorate in English, classics and history from the University of Kansas. She is well known as the author of Spirit Tailings and Beyond Spirit Tailings, collections of Montana ghost stories, and she edited Girl from the Gulches: The Story of Mary Ronan. This presentation is funded in part by Humanities Montana.
